Mahalaya Tharpanam is the sesame-and-water offering to the ancestors done during Mahalaya Paksha (in 2026: 27 September – 10 October, Mahalaya Amavasya on 10 October). This is the step-by-step order as followed in the Sukla Yajur Veda, Kanva Sakha — the order the enKarma app presents on screen and chants in priest voice. Yesterday's post gave the dates and who is included; this one is the procedure itself.

Before you start
- Bathe; wear a clean veshti; no breakfast until the tharpanam is done
- Sit facing South on a wooden plank or mat, in a clean spot (terrace, balcony or open floor is fine)
- Keep ready: black sesame (ellu), darbha grass, a copper/silver vessel of water, a wide plate or tray to receive the offered water, a spoon (uddharani), a small vessel for the sipping water
- Keep your persons list ready — father's side, mother's side and the other relations with gothram and names. In the app they are stored once under Tharpanam → Mahalaya → persons
The order of the rite
1. Guru Vandanam
Salutation to Sage Yajnavalkya and the Kanva–Katyayana lineage:

2. Achamanam
Sip water three times (Keshava, Narayana, Madhava) and touch the parts of the face and body with the named fingers — the app shows each touch: (middle + ring finger) left cheek, (index + thumb) right nostril, and so on through the shoulders.
3. Pavitra dharanam
Wear the darbha ring (pavitram) on the ring finger — three blades of darbha for the pitru karma; sit on darbha (darbheshu asinah), hold darbha (darban dharayamanah).
4. Sankalpam
Ganapati dhyanam (Shuklambaradharam Vishnum …), pranayamam (Om Bhuh, Om Bhuvah … Om Apah jyotirasah amritam Brahma bhur-bhuvas-svarom), then the sankalpam proper, in which the app fills in the day:
- dvitiye parardhe, shveta-varaha kalpe, vaivasvata manvantare, ashtavimshatitame kaliyuge prathame pade
- Jambudvipe Bharatavarshe Bharatakhande Meroh dakshine parshve
- the year (… nama samvatsare), ayanam (Dakshinayane), ritu, month (Kanya mase), paksha (Krishna pakshe), tithi, weekday (… vasara yuktayam), nakshatra (… nakshatra yuktayam)
- then your gothram, and the two lineages: pitru, pitamaha, prapitamaha … and matamaha, pramatamaha, vriddha-pramatamaha … with their wives (sapatnika), Vasu-Rudra-Aditya svarupanam
- closing: … Mahalaya punyakale sakrit Mahalaya-shraddham tila-tarpana-rupena adya karishye
Important: The sacred thread moves to apasavyam (over the right shoulder, under the left arm) for everything addressed to the Pitrus, and back to savyam for the deva parts. The app marks each change: 'பூணூலை … அபஸவ்யம் / ஸவ்யம்'.
5. Avahanam – Asanam (invocation and seat)
Three darbha kurchams (bundles) are placed — the app calls them by position: மேல் கூர்ச்சம் (upper) for the father's line, நடு கூர்ச்சம் (middle) for the mother's line, கீழ் கூர்ச்சம் (lower) for the other relations (karunika pitrus). Each group is invited with … avahayami and seated with the asana mantra; the sesame is sprinkled (avakirya).
6. Tharpanam — the offering lines
For every ancestor the same form, changing gothram, relation and name. Father's line first (upper kurcham):

- Pitru vargam (upper kurcham): father (Vasu), grandfather (Rudra), great-grandfather (Aditya) — then mother, grandmother, great-grandmother
- Matamaha vargam (middle kurcham): mother's father, his father, his grandfather — then their wives
- Karunika pitrus (lower kurcham): each relation you listed — jyeshtha/kanishtha pitruvya (father's brothers), pitrushvasa, matula, matrushvasa, shvashura / shvashru, brothers, sisters, guru, friends — each with its own gothram and name
- Finally Visesha tharpanam for all those of both lineages known and unknown — ubhaya-vamshe jnata-ajnata
Water is poured from the tip of the fingers (pitru-tirtha, between thumb and index finger) with black sesame, three times for each name. The app counts the three for you — the line stays highlighted until its three chants are done.
7. Closing
- Anena … Mahalaya-shraddhena Bhagavan pitru-rupi Janardana priyatam — may Janardana in the form of the Pitrus be pleased
- Kurchams released (udvasanam), sacred thread back to savyam, achamanam
- The offered water and sesame are poured at the root of a tree or into flowing water — never down a drain
- Then food: first a little to a crow (kaka-pindam) if custom, then the family
Common mistakes
- Doing the pitru lines with the thread in savyam — watch the app's marks
- Forgetting a wife's name: the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother are addressed by name too
- Mixing the kurchams — the mother's line is the middle kurcham, not the upper
- Skipping the sankalpam details — tithi and nakshatra must be that day's; the app takes them from its panchangam, but check the date shown on top of the screen
- Eating before the tharpanam
Using enKarma for Mahalaya
- Tharpanam → Mahalaya; check the date/tithi shown at the top
- Persons list: add each relation once — relation, gothram, name, elder/younger (மூத்த / இளைய) where it matters

Conclusion
The whole Mahalaya tharpanam takes 25–40 minutes depending on how many relations you include. Do it once in the paksha at least — Mahalaya Amavasya, 10 October 2026, is the day for everyone. Tomorrow: the relation words of the sankalpam (pitruvya, matula, shvashru …) explained, so you know exactly whom you are naming.

3. பவித்ர தாரணம்
மோதிர விரலில் தர்ப்பை பவித்ரம் (பித்ரு கர்மத்திற்கு மூன்று பில்); தர்ப்பையில் அமர்ந்து (தர்பேஷு ஆஸீனஹ), தர்ப்பை கையில் (தர்பான் தாரயமாணஹ).
4. ஸங்கல்பம்
கணபதி த்யானம் (சுக்லாம்பரதரம்…), ப்ராணாயாமம் (ஓம் பூஹ, ஓம் புவஹ … பூர்புவஸ்வரோம்), பின் ஸங்கல்பம் — அன்றைய விவரங்களைச் செயலி நிரப்பும்:

மூன்று தர்ப்பைக் கூர்ச்சங்கள்: மேல் கூர்ச்சம் — தந்தை வழி; நடு கூர்ச்சம் — தாய் வழி; கீழ் கூர்ச்சம் — மற்ற உறவுகள் (காருணிக பித்ருக்கள்). ஒவ்வொரு குழுவையும் ஆவாஹனம் செய்து, ஆஸன மந்திரத்துடன் அமர்த்தி, எள் தூவவும் (அவகீர்யா).
6. தர்ப்பணம்
