Mahalaya Paksha (Pitru Paksha) is the fortnight of the year set aside for our ancestors. In 2026 it runs from Sunday 27 September to Saturday 10 October, ending with Mahalaya Amavasya (Sarva Pitru Amavasya) on 10 October 2026. This is the one period when tharpanam done for the departed reaches all of them — father's line, mother's line, and every relative who has no one else to remember them. Here is what it is, why it matters, and the date-by-date list so you can plan.

What is Mahalaya Paksha?
Maha (great) + alaya (abode / gathering): the fortnight when the Pitrus — the departed of our lineage — are said to descend and stay close to their families, waiting for water and sesame. It is the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Bhadrapada that ends with Mahalaya Amavasya, the day before Navaratri begins. The Sun is in Kanya (Virgo); tradition says Yama releases the Pitrus for these fifteen days.
Two observances belong to it:
- Mahalaya Tharpanam — water and sesame offering, which every man whose father has passed away can do at home, on any day of the paksha (best on the tithi of the father's death, or on Mahalaya Amavasya, or on all 15 days).
- Mahalaya Shraddham — the fuller rite with Brahmin bhojanam and pinda, done once in the paksha, usually with a vadhyar.
Mahalaya Paksha 2026 — date by date
Tithis as they fall for shraddha in 2026 (check your local panchangam for the exact tithi at your place):
- Sat 26 Sep — Purnima (Bhadrapada Pournami); Mahalaya begins from the next tithi
- Sun 27 Sep — Pratamai (Pratipada) shraddham
- Mon 28 Sep — Dwitiya
- Tue 29 Sep — Tritiya
- Wed 30 Sep — Chaturthi & Panchami (Bharani shraddham falls in this stretch — see your panchangam)
- Thu 1 Oct — Shashthi
- Fri 2 Oct — Saptami
- Sat 3 Oct — Ashtami
- Sun 4 Oct — Navami (Avidhava Navami — for women who died before their husbands)
- Mon 5 Oct — Dashami
- Tue 6 Oct — Ekadashi
- Wed 7 Oct — Dwadashi
- Thu 8 Oct — Trayodashi
- Fri 9 Oct — Chaturdashi (for those who died by accident or weapons)
- Sat 10 Oct — Mahalaya Amavasya (Sarva Pitru Amavasya) — for all ancestors, and for anyone whose tithi is unknown
Navaratri 2026 begins the next day, Sunday 11 October.
Who should do Mahalaya Tharpanam?
- Any man whose father is no more. (While the father lives, the son does not offer tharpanam; the father does it for his ancestors.)
- Married or unmarried, with or without upanayanam according to family practice — ask your vadhyar.
- Those abroad: it can be done at home, facing south, with water, black sesame and darbha — the enKarma app carries the complete text.
Whom do we remember?
The Mahalaya sankalpam is wider than the monthly Amavasya tharpanam. Besides the three generations on the father's side (pitru, pitamaha, prapitamaha with their wives) and the mother's side (matamaha, pramatamaha, vriddha-pramatamaha with their wives), it includes:
- Mother's father's line if the mother's brothers are no more (matula, etc.)
- Wife's parents (shvashura, shvashru)
- Elder / younger brothers and their wives, sisters and their husbands
- Father's brothers and sisters, mother's sisters
- Guru, friends, and "all those of both lineages known and unknown" — ubhaya-vamshe jnata-ajnata
This is why the app asks for each relation with its gothram and name — every one of them gets a separate tila-tharpanam in the sankalpam text.
The Mahalaya sankalpam — what you say
The heart of it, in the Sukla Yajur Veda Kanva tradition:
… महालय पुण्यकाले सकृत् महालयश्राद्धं तिलतर्पण रूपेण अद्य करिष्ये
… Mahalaya punyakale sakrit Mahalaya-shraddham tila-tarpana-rupena adya karishye
(In this holy Mahalaya period, I now perform, once, the Mahalaya shraddha in the form of sesame-water offering)
Then, for each ancestor, the offering line with gothram, name and the form of the Vasus / Rudras / Adityas, ending … idam tilodakam svadha namah tarpayami — three times each.
How to prepare (checklist)
- Black sesame (ellu), darbha grass (for the pavitram and the kurchams), a copper or silver vessel, water
- Face South; wear the sacred thread over the right shoulder (prachinaviti) during the tharpanam
- Fast until the tharpanam is over; no onion, garlic, non-veg for the day
- Know the gothram and names: father's side, mother's side — write them down once; the app stores them
- Choose the day: the father's tithi, or Mahalaya Amavasya (10 Oct), or all fifteen days
What NOT to do in Pitru Paksha
- No new ventures, house-warming, purchases of gold/vehicles, engagements (by custom)
- No cutting of hair/nails on tharpanam day
- Do not skip Mahalaya because of travel or being abroad — the offering is water and sesame; it can be done anywhere with the correct sankalpam

- திருமணமானவர் / ஆகாதவர் — குடும்ப வழக்கப்படி; வாத்யாரிடம் கேளுங்கள்.
