Pradosham is the evening of the thirteenth tithi (Trayodashi), twice a month, when Lord Shiva is worshipped in the twilight hour — roughly 1½ hours before and after sunset. It is the quickest of all Shiva vratas: one evening, one abhishekam, one circumambulation of Nandi. Coming Pradoshams: Thursday 24 September 2026 (Shukla Trayodashi) and Thursday 8 October 2026 (Krishna Trayodashi, in Mahalaya Paksha). Confirm timings on the panchangam for your city.

The story

When the Devas and Asuras churned the ocean, the poison Halahala rose first. Shiva drank it to save the worlds, holding it in his throat (Neelakantha). On the Trayodashi evening the Devas came to thank him, and Shiva, pleased, danced between the horns of Nandi. That twilight — pradosha kala — is when Shiva grants whatever is asked with a clean heart.

Kinds of Pradosham

Nitya Pradosham — every Trayodashi evening (Shukla and Krishna)
Soma Pradosham — when it falls on a Monday: most auspicious
Shani Pradosham — on a Saturday: for removing Shani's troubles, progeny
Bhauma Pradosham — on a Tuesday: for debts and health
Maha Pradosham — the Krishna Trayodashi before Maha Shivaratri (February–March)

Pradosha kala — the time

From about 1½ hours before sunset to 1½ hours after — the tithi must be Trayodashi during this window
In Tamil temples the special abhishekam and Nandi puja happen between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm
If Trayodashi ends before pradosha kala, the previous evening is taken; the panchangam decides

How to observe

The day

Fast from morning — fruits and milk, or nothing until the evening puja
Do the morning Sandhyavandanam as usual; add "Om Namah Shivaya" japa
Avoid non-veg, onion, garlic, alcohol; keep silence or soft speech

The evening puja (home or temple)

Bathe again before sunset; wear clean clothes; apply vibhuti
Sankalpam: … Trayodashyam punya-tithau pradosha-kale … Sri Parameshvara prityartham pradosha-vratam karishye
Abhishekam to the Shiva Lingam with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar, tender coconut, and finally water — chanting Om Namah Shivaya or Sri Rudram if you know it
Offer bilva leaves (three-leaved, not torn), vibhuti, flowers, incense, ghee lamp
Naivedyam: fruits, sweet pongal, or simply jaggery-rice
Nandi: worship the bull first; in a temple, look at the Lingam through Nandi's horns; go round Nandi
Deeparadhana at the exact pradosha moment; then the Pradosha stotram

After

Break the fast after the puja with the prasadam
Do the evening Sandhya (it falls in the same twilight — do it first, then the Pradosham puja, or as your family does)

Benefits

Removal of obstacles and debts; relief from illness
Progeny, and a good match for marriage
Peace of mind; the Puranas say the merit of Pradosham equals that of many yajnas
Soma Pradosham and Shani Pradosham are especially recommended for Shani and Chandra doshas

Do's and don'ts

Do: reach the temple before the abhishekam begins; offer bilva; circumambulate Nandi; keep the fast till the deeparadhana
Don't: offer tulasi or ketaki flower to Shiva; use a bilva leaf that is torn; break the fast before the puja; sleep during pradosha kala
