Sharad Navaratri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October, the day after Mahalaya Amavasya, and ends with Vijayadashami on Tuesday 20 October (Saraswati puja / Ayudha puja on the ninth day, Monday 19 October — check your panchangam, tithis can shift by a day). Nine nights of the Goddess in her three forms — Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati — and, in Tamil homes, nine days of the Golu (Kolu) doll display. This is the preparation post: what to buy, what to set up, what to chant, day by day.

The three-by-three plan

Days 1–3 (11–13 Oct) — Durga: strength, removal of obstacles; red
Days 4–6 (14–16 Oct) — Lakshmi: wealth, plenty; green/gold
Days 7–9 (17–19 Oct) — Saraswati: learning, arts; white/yellow. Day 9 = Saraswati puja & Ayudha puja
Day 10 (20 Oct) — Vijayadashami: victory; Vidyarambham (children's first letters), new beginnings

Golu — setting up (do it on 10 October evening or 11 morning)

Odd number of steps — 3, 5, 7, 9 — of planks or a ready stand; cover with cloth
Top step: the deities (Vishnu, Shiva-Parvati, the three Devis, Ganesha, Murugan); then saints and gurus; then kings and festivals; then people and trades (the village, the wedding set, the market); bottom: animals, plants, and the Chettiar couple with their shop
The Kalasam: a brass/silver pot with water, mango leaves and a coconut, placed on rice — this is the Devi invoked for the nine days
A small park or garden made by children with sprouted seeds (navadhanya) — sown on day 1, green by day 9
Lamp on both sides, morning and evening; the Golu is never left dark in the evening

Shopping list

Kalasam pot, mango leaves, coconut, raw rice, turmeric, kumkum, sandal
Flowers daily (jasmine, chrysanthemum, lotus), betel leaves and nuts, fruits
Ghee/oil for lamps, incense, camphor
Sundal ingredients — a different legume each day: chana, moong, peanuts, black-eyed peas, rajma, chickpeas, green peas, dry peas, sweet corn
Return gifts for guests (thamboolam): betel, coconut, turmeric, kumkum, a small gift, and a bag
New dolls for this year (custom: at least one new pair)
Blouse pieces / vessels for the Saraswati and Ayudha puja; books, tools and instruments cleaned for day 9

Daily routine for the nine days

Morning: bath, lamp, kalasam puja, a chapter of Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati) or Lalita Sahasranamam; morning Sandhyavandanam as usual
Evening: lamp, sundal prasadam, guests invited — women and girls receive thamboolam; songs (keerthanas of Muthuswami Dikshitar's Navavarana, Kamalamba Navavaranam, or simple bhajans)
Fast: many keep one meal a day, or fruit-and-milk, for all nine days; grains-free on the ninth
Keep the house clean, lamp lit, and speech gentle — the Devi is a guest

Day nine — Saraswati puja & Ayudha puja (19 Oct)

Place books, notebooks, pens, musical instruments, laptops in front of the Devi the previous evening
Vehicles, tools, kitchen implements are cleaned, decorated with sandal-kumkum and garlands
Puja with flowers; naivedyam of sweet pongal, vadai, fruits; break a pumpkin (custom) for the vehicle
No study or work with those tools till Vijayadashami morning

Day ten — Vijayadashami (20 Oct)

Take the books back with a short prayer; children write their first letters (Vidyarambham) in rice — Om Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah
Start new learning — a first music lesson, a new book — on this day
The Golu: one doll is laid down (put to sleep) in the evening to close the festival; pack up the next day
Sami tree worship, shastra puja and Ramlila in the north

Mantras for the nine days

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके ।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

Navaratri and the Sandhyavandanam

The daily Sandhya continues through the festival — Navaratri adds to it, never replaces it. Mahalaya ends the day before Navaratri begins: tharpanam on 10 October, then the Kalasam on 11 October. Conclusion

Navaratri is the festival where the house itself becomes the temple for nine days. Buy the dolls and the pulses this week, set up the steps on 10 October evening, light the lamp on 11 October morning, and let the nine evenings fill with guests, sundal and song. Vijayadashami, 20 October, is the day to begin anything you have been putting off.
