In the Mahalaya sankalpam every ancestor is called by relation word + gothram + name: … gotran … sharmanah asmat pitrun, asmat matamahan, jyeshtha pitruvyan. These Sanskrit relation words are exact — they say whose side, which generation, elder or younger — and a wrong word sends the offering to the wrong person. The three-generation vargams

The core of every tharpanam is two groups of three generations, each with the wives:

Pitru vargam (father's line): pitru → pitamaha → prapitamaha (and in the Kanva Mahalaya text also vriddha-prapitamaha); wives: matru, pitamahi, prapitamahi
Matamaha vargam (mother's line): matamaha → pramatamaha → vriddha-pramatamaha; wives: matamahi, pramatamahi, vriddha-pramatamahi

Note the pattern: pra- adds a generation, vriddha- adds one more; -mahi is the wife. The three forms Vasu / Rudra / Aditya go with the three generations in order.

Elder or younger — மூத்த / இளைய

For a father's brother, a brother, a mother's sister and a few others, the sankalpam says whether the person is elder (jyeshtha, மூத்த) or younger (kanishtha, இளைய) relative to your parent or to you. The app asks this once per person and puts the right word in front of the relation. Where no age order applies (mother's father, father-in-law…) it is left out.

Gothram — which one to use?

Father's line and its women: your own gothram
Mother's father's line: mother's father's gothram (the app calls it mother-side gothram)
Father's sister, mother's sister, wife's parents, sister's husband: their own family's gothram — usually the husband's family gothram for a married woman
Guru / friend: their gothram if known, else the text says … gotra as given

The three forms: Vasu, Rudra, Aditya

First generation (father / mother's father) — Vasu-svarupan
Second (grandfather) — Rudra-svarupan
Third (great-grandfather) — Aditya-svarupan
In the karunika (other relations) section the text uses the collective Vasu-Rudra-Aditya-svarupanam

How the app builds the line

Example, father's elder brother named Nagarajan of Moudgalya gothram:

For a woman the suffix changes: … gotrah … dah … asmat matrushvasah (the app applies the feminine forms). If you enter a wrong relation the whole line addresses the wrong person — check the persons list once a year.

Frequently asked

My father is alive but my grandfather is not — you do not perform tharpanam; your father does, and for him the grandfather is pitru.
My mother is alive — her name is left out of the pitru vargam; the app hides it when you mark her living.
I do not know a great-grandfather's name — ask elders; otherwise the tharpanam is done with the relation word and gothram only, and the name added when known.
Adopted / step relations — follow your vadhyar; the app takes whatever relation you assign.

Conclusion

The relation words are the address on the offering. Keep them exact: whose side, which generation, elder or younger, and the right gothram. Enter them once in enKarma's persons list and every Mahalaya, Amavasya and Tharpanam text after that carries them correctly, chanted in the priest's voice.
